DVLA eye testing in shepherds bush west london

DVLA Eye Testing Shepherds Bush

We can test your eyes in our Shepherds Bush brunch in West London to the standards that are set by the DVLA using our digital test chart and automated visual fields machine.

Group 1

This group is for those who are driving for personal use for example driving your own car or motorbike. The standards for group 1 licenses are:

  • Minimum 6/12 on the Snellen/LogMAR scale. This can be achieved with or without glasses or contact lenses in one or both eyes
  • Adequate field of vision measured through visual fields testing.

Group 2

This group is for those who are driving for work, or for those who carry members for the public. This includes:

  • Bus drivers
  • HGV/LGV drivers
  • Train drivers
  • Mini cab drivers (PCO licences)
  • Taxi drivers

The standards that are set by the DVLA for group 2 drivers is higher than those for group 1 tests. Therefore not all Group 1 drivers are able to get a Group 2 licence. The standards for group 2 licenses are:

  • Minimum 6/7.5 on the Snellen/LogMAR scale in your best eye and at least 6/60 in your weaker eye. This can be achieved with glasses/contact lenses with a prescription up to +8.00 dioptres or below.
  • Your horizontal visual fields must be uninterrupted for at least 160 degrees, extending at least 70 degrees right and left and 30 degrees up and down.
  • Any defect in the central 30 degrees is not acceptable.

What to expect on the day

  • 1 – Visual acuity testing:
This is where we measure your visual acuity using a DVLA testing chart.
  • 2- Visual field testing:
The main aim of this test is to measure the size of your field of vision using both eyes. During this test you will be required to look at a red light and press a button every time you see a white light flash to the side.

Please arrive on time to your appointment.
Please bring in any form of photo ID with you, ideally your driving license.
If you wear glasses or contact lenses for driving, please bring them with you.
The test should last approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
Once the test is complete you will be given a copy to submit with your form to the DVLA.

Questions FAQ
  • Do you notify the DVLA if I do not meet the legal driving standards?

Optometrists are not legally required to notify the DVLA. It is the responsibility of the patient to notify the DVLA if they do not meet the standard. If a patient does not meet the DVLA standards for Driving, our optometrist in Shepherds Bush will advise them not to drive.

  • If I’m blind in one eye can I still drive?

If you are driving for personal use (Group 1), then it would be possible to drive subject to meeting the driving standards. If you want to drive for work purposes or for any purposes where you require a group 2 license, then you will not be allowed.

  • Do I need to notify the DVLA if I wear glasses?

When applying for a driving license, you are required to state if you need glasses when driving. If you need glasses for driving your driving license would normally have a code 01 put on it.
